Pokémon TCG single: Pikachu (Movie Promo) - WoTC Promo, from Pokemon Promo Cards. Pictured: this printing of the card. Every card ships triple-sleeved — a soft sleeve, a deck sleeve and a rigid top loader.

Item Description

In November 1999, a ticket to Pokémon: The First Movie came with a bonus: one of four Wizards of the Coast Black Star Promo cards, handed out at theaters to fans who had lined up for Mewtwo Strikes Back. This Pikachu, Black Star Promo number 4, was one of them, and it captures the height of the original Pokémon craze in a single card.

Ken Sugimori's artwork shows Pikachu in the classic early style that defined the first wave of cards. The movie promo carries a gold foil stamp reading “Kids' WB Presents Pokémon The First Movie” in the corner, a detail that ties the card to that theatrical release. In the game it is a 50 HP Lightning Pokémon with Recharge, which searches your deck for a Lightning Energy and attaches it, and Thunderbolt, which deals 50 damage at the cost of discarding all its Energy.

This is the Wizards of the Coast Black Star Promo printing, number 4, illustrated by Ken Sugimori. For a vintage promo binder or a Pikachu collection spanning every era, this movie-night card is a perfect piece of late-'90s Pokémon history.
