Item Description

Licensed cartoon games from 1995 were not supposed to be this good. Phantom 2040, adapted from the animated series that reimagined Lee Falk's masked hero as a cyberpunk vigilante, turned out to be one of the most ambitious action games of the Genesis's final years: a sprawling, branching adventure that plays far more like Metroid than a typical TV tie-in.

You are Kit Walker, the 24th Phantom, fighting through the polluted, corporate-run city of Metropia against Rebecca Madison, her company Maximum Inc. and its army of robotic biots. A city map lays out where you can go, and the levels themselves are large and open, full of secret areas and power-ups. The inductance rope is your signature tool, letting you climb and swing through the city in the style of Bionic Commando while also stunning enemies. Alongside it you build an arsenal that includes a smart gun and homing missiles, with two weapons ready at once, plus fists and kicks to save energy. Upgrades lengthen your health, energy and rope, opening areas you could not reach the first time through and making a return trip worthwhile.

The structure is what earns the game its cult reputation. Choices you make change which levels you play, which items you find and which of several endings you see, and they start almost immediately, with the option to head one way to rescue a scientist or the other to face a boss. With more than 60 levels in all, a single run covers only part of the game. The story is dense enough that the options include a summary mode for players who want to skip ahead, and the show's environmental message runs through everything, giving it a darker, more grown-up tone than most licensed games of its day.

Released as the 16-bit era was winding down, Phantom 2040 slipped past most players and has since been rediscovered as a hidden gem, with reviewers calling it the closest thing the Genesis has to a Metroid game. If your shelf already holds the obvious platformers and you want something deeper, this is the overlooked cartridge to track down.
