Complete in box: the UMD, the manual and the original case, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every game is tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.
Your partner in Phantasy Star Portable is Vivienne, a brand-new CAST android assigned to watch your back, and much of the story's charm comes from watching her work out what it means to be human while the two of you chase down a threat everyone assumed was finished. You play a fresh GUARDIANS trainee in the Gurhal system, a few months after the events of Phantasy Star Universe and its expansion Ambition of the Illuminus, and the alien SEED turn out to be far from gone.
Co-developed by Sonic Team and Alfa System, it was Sega's first handheld Phantasy Star in North America, arriving here in 2009 after a strong Japanese launch that sold more than 342,000 copies in its first week. You build your own hunter from four races, Human, Newman, CAST and Beast, and three classes, with a character creator that covers everything from face and proportions to voice type and pitch. Missions come from Mina at the colony's counter and are focused clears of enemy-packed areas, usually capped with a boss, which is exactly the right shape for a portable session.
The real pull is the loot loop that Phantasy Star Online made famous. Combat plays out in real time, and every mission feeds a steady drip of new weapons, armor and items, more than 150 of them in all. Vivienne fights beside you on every outing, and Laia Martinez, the Beast hunter who serves as your instructor, joins for some missions, so solo play never feels empty. Up to four players can team up over local wireless co-op, which is where the formula comes alive: friends comparing drops, splitting up roles and taking bosses apart together.
Reviews were mixed overall, but 1UP called it an excellent distillation of the Phantasy Star Online and Universe experience, and that is the best way to understand it today. It is a compact, story-driven slice of Sega's online-RPG lineage designed to work in your hands without a server in sight, and it laid the groundwork for the larger Phantasy Star Portable 2. It fills an interesting gap for collectors tracing the series from its Master System roots through the online era.
Sega's long-running RPG goes handheld for the first time in North America with Phantasy Star Portable, a story set between the events of Phantasy Star Universe and Ambition of the Illuminus. Players return to the Gurhal system where they join the new character Vivienne in an attempt to investigate and clear out an area contaminated after the perceived eradication of the alien SEED menace. Gamers can choose from a wide variety of options when creating a custom avatar, and then set about meeting new characters and collecting more than 150 items. Multiplayer fans can also join up to three friends for wireless co-operative exploration and combat.
