The island green on the 17th at Sawgrass has wrecked countless scorecards, and it is waiting for you in PGA Tour Golf, the cartridge that started Electronic Arts' long run of console golf. Sterling Silver Software's Genesis version of the 1990 computer game brings four courses to the console: the TPC at Sawgrass, the TPC at Avenel, the PGA West Stadium Course and Sterling Shores. Before each hole a flyby previews the layout while a touring pro offers a tip, a small touch that gave the cartridge a broadcast feel.
The three-press swing meter is the heart of it. One tap starts the swing, the second sets power, and the third has to land right on the mark or the ball hooks or slices away, while the game tells you exactly how far each club carries at full strength. Wind, lie and club choice all count, and you even trim your bag before a round by leaving a few woods or irons behind. On the green, a grid view shows the slope so you can plan the putt. Six real pros, Fred Couples, Mark McCumber, Larry Mize, Joey Sindelar, Craig Stadler and Bruce Lietzke, can be played or faced as opponents, and you can create a golfer of your own. Practice rounds, full tournaments, a driving range and a putting green round out the menu, and up to four people can play.
It is a demanding game by modern standards, which is part of its charm: low rounds have to be earned, and the swing timing rewards practice. Playing it today shows exactly where EA's PGA Tour series, and the long line of golf games that followed it on the label, first found its footing.

This first game in the series was originally released in 1990 for DOS computers, 1991 for Sega Genesis, Macintosh, SNES, and Commodore Amiga, and 1993 for Sega Master System and Game Gear. It was developed and published by Electronic Arts for DOS and Macintosh, ported to Genesis, SNES, and Game Gear by Sterling Silver Software, to Amiga by Bluesky Innovations, and to Master System by Polygon Games. The Genesis/Mega Drive version features 6 professional golfers as playable or as CPU opponents; Fred Couples, Mark McCumber, Larry Mize, Joey Sindelar, Craig Stadler, Bruce Lietzke.
