Item Description

Every Persona game you have ever heard of traces back to this disc. Released in North America by Atlus in 1996 as Revelations: Persona, it was the first game in the Persona series, a spin-off of Shin Megami Tensei that took that franchise's demons and occult menace and set them loose in a high school. It is also where the Velvet Room and its long-nosed host Igor made their debut, two fixtures that have appeared throughout the series ever since.

The story begins with a group of students at St. Hermelin High School playing a schoolyard fortune-telling game. Something answers. They awaken the ability to summon Personas, manifestations of their inner selves, just as their town of Lunarvale is swallowed by a crisis tied to the SEBEC corporation and a reality-bending experiment. The tone is darker and more traditionally Shin Megami Tensei than the later games, closer to a horror mystery than a slice-of-life story.

Exploration happens in first-person dungeons, and battles play out on a grid where position and weapon range matter, so lining up your party's attacks is part of the strategy. Instead of simply fighting every demon, you can talk to them, with each character offering different approaches. Win a demon over and it may hand you a spell card, which Igor fuses into new Personas in the Velvet Room. It is a demanding, old-school RPG with frequent encounters and a lot of depth for players who lean into it.

The North American release is a fascinating artifact in its own right. Atlus localized it heavily for American audiences, renaming characters and Westernizing details, and the lengthy Snow Queen Quest scenario was left out entirely until the game was remade for the PSP. That makes this PlayStation original a distinctive piece of series history, and with Atlus's Revelations branding on the cover, it is the origin point any serious Persona or Shin Megami Tensei shelf eventually needs.
