Item Description

Persona 5 was already a landmark RPG, and Royal is the version that makes the original hard to go back to. Atlus revisited the Phantom Thieves' year in Tokyo for this expanded edition, released in Japan in 2019 and worldwide in 2020, adding new characters, a new Palace, new music and an entire third semester of story that recasts the ending players thought they knew.

Two newcomers sit at the heart of the additions. Kasumi Yoshizawa, a gymnast at Shujin Academy, joins the cast with her own Confidant route, and the gentle school counselor Takuto Maruki becomes a Confidant whose sessions feed into the game's most debated storyline. The third semester is where Royal earns its reputation, carrying the story past the original conclusion into territory that asks a hard question about happiness and truth, and many players consider it the strongest material in the game.

Royal also reworks the experience around the edges. A grappling hook opens new routes through the Palaces, Will Seeds hidden in each dungeon reward thorough exploration, and new Showtime attacks pair two party members in flashy cinematic finishers. Mementos gains new incentives to dig deeper, the Kichijoji district adds fresh places to spend an afternoon, and Shoji Meguro's acid-jazz score picks up new tracks, including a new ambush battle theme. Several of the original Palaces were tightened up, so the long campaign moves more smoothly than before.

Underneath it all is the Persona 5 formula at full strength: school days spent building Confidant bonds with Ryuji, Ann, Morgana, Makoto, Futaba and the rest, nights spent planning heists in the twisted inner worlds of corrupt adults, and turn-based battles where exploiting weaknesses chains into One More turns and All-Out Attacks. Royal drew near-universal acclaim and is the version to play on PS4. The Steelbook Edition was the collector-minded launch release, built around metal-case packaging, which gives the edition obvious appeal on a shelf full of Atlus RPGs.

About the game

Persona 5 Royal is an enhanced version of the turn-based role-playing game Persona 5, set in modern-day Tokyo. Players control a high school student who leads a group of secret vigilantes called the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, exploring supernatural dungeons called Palaces to change the hearts of corrupt adults. The game combines dungeon crawling and turn-based combat with social simulation elements, where players manage daily activities, build relationships, and develop character statistics across a school year. Royal adds new characters, a third semester, an additional Palace, new music, and expanded story content to the original game.
