Item Description

A transfer student arrives in Tokyo on probation for a crime he did not commit, and within days he is breaking into the warped inner world of an abusive teacher to steal the man's heart. Persona 5 runs on that kind of righteous fury, and it wraps it in some of the boldest presentation an RPG has ever worn: menus that slash across the screen in red, black and white, victory screens posed like album covers, and an acid-jazz soundtrack from Shoji Meguro, with Lyn Inaizumi's vocals on tracks like "Last Surprise" that players still hum years later.

Every day is split between two lives. By day you attend classes, work part-time jobs, read books and build Confidant relationships with a memorable cast that grows to include Ryuji, Ann, Morgana, Yusuke, Makoto, Futaba and Haru, each bond unlocking new abilities in and out of battle. By night the Phantom Thieves infiltrate Palaces, sprawling dungeons built from a target's distorted desires, among them a castle, an art museum and a bank, each staged like a heist, while the randomly generated depths of Mementos offer side requests in between. The calendar is the real boss: there are never quite enough evenings for everything you want to do.

Combat is turn-based but brisk. Hit an enemy's weakness and you earn a One More turn, knock every foe down and you can launch a stylish All-Out Attack, or hold them up at gunpoint and negotiate, which is how new Personas join your side. The Baton Pass hands extra turns between party members, and fusing Personas in the Velvet Room, watched over by Igor and the warden twins Caroline and Justine, turns building the perfect lineup into a hobby of its own.

Directed by Katsura Hashino, Persona 5 took Atlus's long-running series from cult favorite to worldwide hit and set a new bar for style in the genre, and its story of teenagers refusing to stay quiet about adults abusing power still lands. With a campaign that commonly runs around a hundred hours, it is a whole school year of Tokyo life to lose yourself in, and the original release is where the Phantom Thieves' story began before Royal expanded it.
