Item Description

It starts with a rumor: stare at a switched-off TV at midnight on a rainy night and you might glimpse your soulmate. In the sleepy town of Inaba, the rumor turns out to be real and far more dangerous. Persona 4 sends a transfer student from the city to spend a year with his detective uncle, Ryotaro Dojima, and young cousin Nanako, just as bodies begin turning up after foggy days. The Midnight Channel is a doorway into a world inside the television, and the people who appear on it are the next to vanish. What follows is a murder mystery, a coming-of-age story and a dungeon crawler woven tightly together.

Atlus built the game around a calendar. Every day you choose how to spend your time after school: studying for exams, joining a club, working a part-time job, or hanging out with friends to deepen the Social Links that strengthen the Personas you fuse in Igor's Velvet Room. Meanwhile the weather forecast becomes a ticking clock, because anyone thrown into the TV must be rescued before the fog rolls in. The Investigation Team is a cast you will miss when it is over: wisecracking Yosuke, kung-fu-loving Chie, Yukiko of the family inn, tough-guy Kanji, the idol Rise, the mysterious bear Teddie and the "Detective Prince" Naoto. Each earns a place by confronting a Shadow self that voices the truth they have been hiding, and those confrontations give the story its emotional backbone.

Inside the TV, combat rewards aggression and planning in equal measure. Hit an enemy's weakness to knock it down and earn another action; topple the whole group and your party can launch an All-Out Attack in a cartoon cloud of dust. Each dungeon is shaped by a victim's psyche, from a fairy-tale castle to a steamy bathhouse to a secret laboratory, so exploring them doubles as getting to know the people you are trying to save. Shoji Meguro's soundtrack, a blend of funk, J-pop and rock with vocals by Shihoko Hirata, is so catchy that tracks like "Your Affection" and "Reach Out to the Truth" became fan favorites far beyond the game.

Persona 4 reached North America at the end of 2008, two years after the PlayStation 3 launched, and it gave the PS2 one of the finest farewell gifts any console has received. Its characters went on to headline fighting games, a rhythm game and the expanded Persona 4 Golden, but this is where the Investigation Team first gathered at Junes. Small-town mystery, teenage friendship and a final truth worth digging for: few RPGs juggle all three this well.
