Rise Kujikawa is ready for her comeback, and the Investigation Team has signed on as her backup dancers. Then members of the idol group Kanamin Kitchen start vanishing, and the gang is pulled into the Midnight Stage, a world uncomfortably like the TV World they know, where their Personas are useless and the Shadows can only be reached through dance. Persona 4: Dancing All Night turns that premise into a rhythm game with all the warmth and goofy charm of Persona 4's cast.
Notes stream out from the center of the screen toward six targets around its edges, three for the directional buttons and three for the face buttons, and you hit each one as it arrives. Scratch rings call for a flick of the analog stick, and catching Fever rings builds toward Fever, when a partner joins the dance on stage. Clean play pumps up the crowd and the choreography alike, and on the higher difficulties the patterns get wonderfully demanding.
Story Mode plays out over eight chapters, more visual novel than rhythm game in places, packed with the trademark banter between Yu, Yosuke, Chie, Yukiko, Kanji, Naoto, Teddie and Rise. Free Dance grows from four songs to 27 as you progress and lets you dress the team in unlockable costumes and accessories, and clearing every Free Dance song unlocks an extra prologue about how the team got involved in the Love Meets Bonds Festival.
The music is the main event. Shoji Meguro's Persona 4 songs return in fresh mixes, from “Pursuing My True Self” and “Reach Out to the Truth” to “Time to Make History” and “Heaven,” with remixes from guest artists including Tetsuya Komuro and Daisuke Asakura. It was the first of Persona's dance spin-offs, later followed by dancing games for Persona 3 and Persona 5, and unlike those follow-ups it is built around a full story mode, which makes it the one to play if you want more time with the Persona 4 gang after the credits.
Persona 4: Dancing All Night is a story-driven music game of the cult hit RPG Persona 4, developed by ATLUS. Replacing the RPG elements are dance battles that challenge players' dexterity and accuracy, as they tap out re-mixes of fan-favorite themes and brand new music tracks. The storyline continues from after the events of Persona 4, when the teenage mega-idol, Rise Kujikawa, returns to the city to re-take her show biz career. During that time, a strange video appears on the internet and the unfortunate people who watched it have gone missing! Members of Kanamin Kitchen, Rise's junior idol group, have disappeared and it's up to the Investigation team to mount a rescue mission - only they discover the same monstrous Shadows from the Midnight Channel. To make matters even worse, their Persona abilities are rendered ineffective, and the Shadows in P4D can only be defeated by dance, so bust out powerful dance moves to save the day!
