Item Description

Pata, pata, pata, pon. Four drumbeats, and a tiny army of one-eyed warriors marches across the screen. Patapon 3 keeps the rhythm-command idea that made this series one of the PSP's most original creations, tapping out Pata, Pon, Chaka and Don in time with the beat to march, attack, defend and charge, but it changes your place in the story. Instead of acting as the unseen god of the first two games, you now play as the Uberhero, a warrior who strikes the drums himself and fights at the front of the line.

The trouble starts when a group of Patapons opens a mysterious box and releases the Seven Archfiends, who turn everyone to stone except the flag-bearing Hatapon. Revived by Silver Hoshipon, the Uberhero sets out to restore the tribe, facing the undead Bonedeth Brigade and storming the Archfiends' lairs. Between missions you return to the Hideout, a new hub of shops, barracks and the Herogate, and from there you shape a smaller, more personal army built around heroes.

That army is where Patapon 3 leans hardest into role-playing. The Uberhero can switch between classes, starting with the shield-bearing Taterazay, the spear-throwing Yarida and the archer Yumiyacha, and he fights alongside the returning trio of Ton, Chin and Kan. A new experience-point system and a steady flow of loot let you tune every unit's equipment, and the strategy comes from choosing the right mix of classes before you ever hear the first beat. The game was also built around multiplayer, with co-op missions and a four-way competitive mode designed for groups of PSPs playing together.

Reviews were more divided than for the earlier games, since the extra grinding and gear management pull it away from pure rhythm play, but Famitsu inducted it into its Platinum Hall of Fame and its fans love its depth. Hiroyuki Kotani's design and Rolito's silhouette art are as striking as ever, and the more detailed backgrounds give this final chapter of the PSP trilogy a richer look. The first two games were later remastered for PS4, but Patapon 3 never was, so the PSP is still where the trilogy's loot-heavy finale lives.
