Bubble Bobble gave us bubble dragons and Rainbow Islands gave us rainbows. Parasol Stars hands Bubby and Bobby an umbrella and turns it into one of the most versatile weapons in any platformer. Subtitled The Story of Bubble Bobble III, Taito's 1991 game was made for the PC Engine from the start rather than adapted from an arcade machine, which makes it a rare Bubble Bobble chapter born on a home console.
The parasol does everything. Open it in front of you and it blocks attacks; hold it overhead and it catches the water droplets that drip from the level and roll along the platforms, ready to be flung at enemies. It stuns foes, hurls them across the screen and doubles as a parachute for gentle landings. Gather five droplets and they merge into one large drop with a special power, and the elemental varieties, from lightning to fire to water, give every round a little puzzle about which drop to save and when to throw it. Defeated enemies burst into fruit, cakes and other treats, in true Bubble Bobble fashion.
There are eight main worlds of seven rounds apiece, each capped by a boss, and the boss music is a cheeky riff on the 1989 hit Lambada. The real ending is hidden: collect three Star items to open a secret door on the final world, leading to two bonus worlds themed after Bubble Bobble and Taito's Chack'n Pop and on to the final villain, Chaostikhan. The soundtrack is by Noriyuki Iwadare, who went on to score the Lunar and Grandia games, and it bounces with the same sunny energy as the visuals.
Working Designs brought it to North America on the TurboGrafx-16, and Entertainment Weekly named it the 15th greatest game available in 1991. A second player can join as Bobby with a TurboTap, and the later Amiga, Atari ST, NES and Game Boy versions were all converted from this one. It is the original Parasol Stars, the version every port was copied from, and the place to play the Bubble Bobble story's most inventive detour.
Break out the bandages and get ready for some finger-searing action! Join Bubby on his latest quest to save the universe, this time with a Magic Umbrella. Umbrella!? Yes, Umbrella! This powerful parasol puts the elements themselves at your command! Shock the tonnage out of the whales with Lightning! Fry the feathers off the crazed, beady-eyed birds with Fire! Or, drown the demented dinosaurs with a tidal wave of Raindrops! Need help? Your buddy Bobby is always nearby. Have a friend plug into your TurboTap and blast into two player simultaneous play. Be prepared for a quest that will take you to eight amazing planets, forcing you to uncover the secret that will unleash the Parasol Stars! Parasol Stars is the third game in the Bubble Bobble franchise (and is often labeled "Parasol Stars: The Story Bubble Bobble III"), as well as a semi-official sequel to the second Bubble Bobble spin-off, Rainbow Island.
