Aya Brea came back changed. Three years after the events in New York, she is now an agent of MIST, a special unit built to hunt the mitochondrial monsters that nearly consumed Manhattan, and Parasite Eve II moves her across the country to a new outbreak. It begins with a nightmare inside the Akropolis Tower in Los Angeles and leads her into the Nevada desert, to the tiny, sun-baked town of Dryfield and a conspiracy buried beneath it.
The biggest change from the first game is the combat. Square swapped the original's Active Time Battle system for real-time action closer to classic survival horror: you aim, shoot and dodge freely as Neo-Mitochondrion Creatures lunge at you from every angle. The role-playing roots are still there, though. Defeated enemies yield EXP to unlock and strengthen Aya's Parasite Energy powers, from fiery attacks to healing, and Bounty Points to spend on new guns, ammunition and armor. Equipment matters, and so does choosing which abilities to grow, giving the game a satisfying sense of progression that most survival horror never attempted.
Dryfield is the heart of the experience. The run-down motel, the gun shop, the dusty main street and the eccentric cast holed up there give the middle of the game a lived-in, almost western flavor, before the story sinks underground into the secret Shelter facility and the truth about who is creating these monsters. Naoshi Mizuta's score keeps things tense and atmospheric, and the pre-rendered backgrounds are some of the most detailed Square produced on the PlayStation. Once you finish, harder replay modes and additional unlocks give you reasons to go back in.
Parasite Eve II is also historically notable as the series' first release in PAL regions. It is the final chapter of Aya's story on the original PlayStation, a moodier, more action-focused sequel that shows Square experimenting boldly with its own formula, and a fascinating companion piece for anyone who has played the first game and wants to see where Aya went next.
Parasite Eve II is an action role-playing survival horror video game released exclusively for the PlayStation. The game was developed by Square and published in Japan in 1999 and in both North America and, unlike the previous game, in PAL regions in 2000. It is the sequel to Parasite Eve and the second game in the series of the same name. Parasite Eve II is set several years after the events in the original game. The protagonist from the first game, Aya Brea, also features in this game as the playable character. She becomes involved with another outbreak of Mitochondrial creatures. Gameplay diverges from the previous game: battles take place in real time and the area of action is less restrictive. The approach is more typical of traditional survival horror games, although some role-playing elements are retained.
