Mario arrives in Toad Town for the Origami Festival and finds Princess Peach folded into a smiling, unsettling paper version of herself. Behind it all is King Olly, a self-proclaimed origami king who wants to refold the entire world in his own image, and before long Peach's Castle has been wrapped up in five enormous streamers and carried away. Mario's partner for the journey is Olivia, Olly's kind-hearted sister, whose wide-eyed optimism and paper-folding powers drive one of the warmest, funniest stories in the Paper Mario series.
Battles take place on a ring. Enemies are scattered across concentric circles, and before each turn you rotate and slide the rings to line them up for a row of jumps or a cluster for a hammer swing, all against a clock. Solve the puzzle and Mario gets an attack boost; misjudge it and the fight drags. Boss battles flip the idea, putting Mario on the outer ring and asking you to chart a path of arrows and action panels to reach the enemy at the center. The headline bosses are household objects twisted into monsters, such as a giant rubber band, a set of colored pencils and a pair of scissors, and each fight is a puzzle in its own right.
Exploration is where The Origami King shines brightest. Hundreds of Toads are hidden in the scenery, folded into shapes or crumpled behind walls, and Mario patches Not-Bottomless Holes in the landscape with handfuls of confetti. Olivia's 1,000-Fold Arms let Mario peel back the world itself at special spots, tearing open hidden paths and grabbing at bosses. Locations run from the stagecraft of Shogun Studios to the open waters of the Shy Guy Sea, and the supporting cast includes Bob-omb Bobby, a soft-spoken companion whose story arc lands with surprising emotional weight.
Developed by Intelligent Systems and released in 2020, it stays true to the series' papercraft roots while taking big swings with its world: a sprawling, interconnected map full of secrets and a script that moves from slapstick to quiet character moments that land harder than expected. Reviewers singled out its humor and exploration even as the ring battles divided opinion, and Olivia's journey makes a delightful Switch-era chapter for anyone who loves Paper Mario's wit.
Join Mario and his new companion Olivia on a comedic adventure that will take you to the far corners of a papercraft world in Paper Mario: The Origami King on Nintendo Switch! Face off against the Origami King and his army of paper invaders, team up with some extraordinary companions and master magical powers on your quest to save the world. Unwrap an epic quest! Travel the land, repair the damage done by the Folded Soldiers and rescue Toads trapped in all manner of wacky scrapes! With the help of Olivia’s paper-folding powers, use the far-reaching 1,000 Fold Arms and other paper transformations to save those imprisoned by the Origami King’s henchmen, and help restore peace to the world. Put a stop to King Olly's plans by engaging in battles which will put both your tactical thinking and puzzle solving skills to the test – against his origami army, as well as humongous bosses under his command!
