In 1995, a brand-new Sega console needed to show what it could do, and Panzer Dragoon answered with something stranger and more beautiful than a typical shooter: a lone rider on an armored blue dragon gliding over flooded ruins and desert wastes, in a world that felt ancient, broken and only half explained. Sega's Team Andromeda built it as a launch title for the Saturn in North America, and it became the foundation of a cult series that ran through Panzer Dragoon Zwei, the RPG Panzer Dragoon Saga and Panzer Dragoon Orta on the original Xbox.
This 2020 remake from MegaPixel Studio, published by Forever Entertainment, rebuilds that first adventure with modern visuals while keeping its structure faithful to the original. You still fly on rails as the world scrolls toward you, sweeping a targeting reticle across swarms of enemies and rotating your view to meet attacks from the sides and behind. Holding the fire button paints multiple targets with the lock-on laser and releases them in a single volley, the signature move of the series, as you face giant insects, sandworms and Imperial battleships on the way to a showdown with the Empire's own dragon.
Two control schemes are on offer. Classic controls recreate the Saturn feel, with the shoulder buttons rotating the view, while the modern scheme turns the right stick into a free-aim reticle and plays more like a twin-stick shooter. Critics were mixed on the remake overall and noted its short length, but the soul of the original survives: Yoshitaka Azuma's haunting score, the eerie, Moebius-tinged design of the world, and compact stages built to be replayed until you know every wave by heart.
For PS4 owners, it is the most straightforward way to see where the Panzer Dragoon saga began without tracking down a Saturn, and a fine pickup for anyone following Sega's more adventurous side. It is also a snapshot of a revival moment, when a long-dormant cult franchise suddenly found new life on modern consoles.
