Item Description

Pac-Man needs no introduction, but Pac-Man: Special Color Edition gives you a fresh reason to meet him again. Namco's 1999 Game Boy Color release pairs Toru Iwatani's 1980 arcade original with Pac-Attack, the falling-block puzzle spin-off, so the maze-chasing classic and a sharp, underrated puzzle game share a single cartridge.

The arcade game is all here in spirit: clear the dots, grab an Energizer and turn the tables on Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde, each ghost hunting with its own personality, while the humorous intermissions reward you for surviving a few rounds. The maze has been adapted to fit the small screen, and the color display finally gives the ghosts their proper red, pink, cyan and orange after years of monochrome Game Boy versions. It is an easy game to pick up and a hard one to put down.

Pac-Attack is the real surprise. Blocks and ghosts fall together into the well, and while solid rows clear the usual way, ghosts only disappear when you drop in a Pac-Man piece that chomps through every ghost in his path. Setting up long chains of ghosts for a single Pac-Man to devour rewards thinking several pieces ahead, and it is easy to come for the arcade game and stay for the puzzle half.

Together they make one of the most satisfying arcade packages on the system: Namco's most famous creation at its purest, alongside a puzzle variant that holds its own next to Tetris. With a quick maze run and a puzzle session each a menu away, it is the kind of cartridge that never stays out of the Game Boy Color for long.

About the game

One of the most popular and influential games of the 1980's, Pac-Man stars a little, yellow dot-muncher who works his way around to clear a maze of the various dots and fruit which inhabit the board. Pac-Man's goal is continually challenged by four ghosts: The shy blue ghost Bashful (Inky), the trailing red ghost Shadow (Blinky), the fast pink ghost Speedy (Pinky), and the forgetful orange ghost Pokey (Clyde). One touch from any of these ghosts means a loss of life for Pac-Man. Pac-Man can turn the tables on his pursuers by eating of the four Energizers located within the maze. During this time, the ghosts turn blue, and Pac-Man can eat them for bonus points. This only lasts for a limited amount of time, as the ghost's eyes float back to their center box, and regenerate to chase after Pac-Man again. Survive a few rounds of gameplay, and be treated to humorous intermissions between Pac-Man and the ghosts.
