Item Condition

Game + manual: the cartridge and its manual, no box. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Few cartridges tell the story of the early-'80s video game boom like Atari's Pac-Man. Pac-Man mania was at its height when the cartridge reached the 2600 in March 1982, Atari staged a National Pac-Man Day to celebrate, and it became the best-selling home video game of the year, with more than seven million copies sold in 1982 alone. For millions of families, this was the first Pac-Man they ever played at home.

Programmer Tod Frye had to fit the arcade sensation onto a 4K cartridge running on a console with 128 bytes of RAM, and the result is a Pac-Man all its own. The maze is laid out differently, with the escape tunnels moved to the top and bottom of the screen; the dots become rectangular wafers; the bonus fruit becomes an orange vitamin; and the four ghosts take turns being drawn, which gives them their famous flicker. Critics were harsh about how far it strayed from the coin-op, and it is still among the most debated arcade conversions ever made.

That reputation is a big part of its fascination. Its enormous sales, the expectations around it and the reaction to it are woven into the history of Atari and the 1983 crash, and its shortcomings set the stage for the much-improved Ms. Pac-Man that followed on the 2600. Taken on its own terms, it is still a quick, twitchy maze chase with a two-player mode, a cartridge that seemed to be in every 2600 owner's house, and a landmark of video game history you can still plug into the console.

About the game

This is a "new" version of Pac-Man for Atari 2600 I've been programming since about 2007, but had left in 2008, then in 2013 I resume again to try to finish. I've been trying to make it as close to the original looking at various sites on the "AI" Ghosts, game logic, etc. This version has nothing to do with the other version called pacman4k, this is a completely new version, do not use any undocumented opcode. Currently the rom is about 120 bytes free, so I'm trying to add other things.
