Item Description

Pac-in-Time is a fascinating chapter in the long history of gaming's most iconic yellow hero. Rather than sticking to the maze-chomping formula that made Pac-Man a household name, this 1995 Game Boy release from Namco takes a sharp turn into side-scrolling platform territory. The Ghost Witch has cast a spell that sends Pac-Man back to his youth in 1975, five years before his debut, and he has to work his way back to the present through five worlds of ten levels each, from mountains to villages and castles.

Each level asks him to gather around 30 Pac-Dots to open the exit, a nod to his maze roots, while the familiar ghosts give chase and a Power Pellet still turns them blue and edible. Jumping through colored hoops grants four items: a rope that latches onto ceilings to swing to higher ground or push objects, fireballs, a hammer for smashing obstacles and swim shoes for underwater sections. Pac-Man can carry all four but use only one at a time, and choosing the right tool is the heart of the puzzle-solving. Passwords every five levels let players return to finished stages.

The game has an unusual backstory. The French studio Atreid Concept built it as a Pac-Man version of its earlier puzzle-platformer Fury of the Furries, and the Game Boy release stays almost identical to that original, while the Super NES version was rebuilt with new levels and themes. On Game Boy the adventure plays out in crisp monochrome, and the handheld format suits its stage-by-stage structure, with a good balance between accessibility and challenge.

Pac-in-Time remains one of the more interesting experiments in the Pac-Man franchise, a moment when its hero was pushed well outside the maze, and a genuine surprise for the Pac-Man fan who thinks they have played everything the series has to offer.

About the game

The game takes place on a huge island separated into eight regions: Desert, Lagoon, Forest, Pyramids, Mountains, Factory, Village, and the Castle. When you manage to get through them, the last one awaits: The Machine which seems to be some sort of a way to get out of here. This level is not a typical stage after stage approach. Each screen has several exits that can either bring you closer to, or further from the end of the game.
