Item Condition

Game only: the cartridge in a protective holder, no box or manual. For the specifics, look to the photos — they're of this exact cartridge. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Two gunslingers, one screen and nothing between them but a cactus. Outlaw boils the Western showdown down to its purest form, and it was one of the first games David Crane programmed at Atari before he went on to co-found Activision and create Pitfall!. It takes its name from Atari's 1976 coin-op, but in practice it plays much closer to Midway's Gun Fight: each player controls a cowboy on opposite sides of the screen, and the goal is simply to put a bullet through the other one first.

The game variations are where Outlaw shows its cleverness. Some leave the field open for a straight quick-draw, others drop a cactus, a wagon or a wall into the middle of the screen, and the wall has to be shot away piece by piece before you can get a clear line. Some variations let bullets bounce off the top and bottom of the playfield, so you can bank a shot around cover the way a pool player banks a ball off the rail. A target-practice mode gives a lone player something to work on between duels.

Each match becomes a little dance of stepping into position, firing and slipping back behind cover before the reply comes. It is a snapshot of the 2600's first year, when simple, readable graphics and instant head-to-head competition were enough to fill an evening, and it still works the same way today: a ruleset you can teach a friend in ten seconds and a rematch that is always one button press away.

About the game

A home console port of 1976 Outlaw for the Atari 2600 by then-Atari employee David Crane. This version is more directly comparable to Midway's Gun Fight, allowing two players to engage in a shoot-out using 2600's joysticks. There are also multiple types of play that differ slightly from the arcade game, including target practice and versions with obstacles that must be shot around or shot through.
