Game + box: the cartridge and its box; the manual is not included. For the specifics, look to the photos — they're of this exact item. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Othello famously takes a minute to learn and a lifetime to master, and that promise is what makes this NES cartridge such an easy one to keep coming back to. The rules could not be simpler: place a disc on the 8x8 board so that it traps a line of your opponent's discs between two of your own, and every trapped disc flips to your color. When the board fills, the player showing the most discs wins. Because a single move can flip whole rows and diagonals at once, the lead swings back and forth until the final turns, and the real game lies in reading the board several moves ahead, fighting for the corners and forcing your opponent into bad choices.

The NES version, brought to North America by Acclaim, keeps the presentation clean and the focus squarely on the board. You can play black or white, take on the computer at four skill levels or face a friend head to head, which makes it a patient teacher for newcomers and a stubborn opponent once you start climbing the difficulty ladder. Beat the fourth level and a hidden fifth one opens up, a nice reward for anyone who sticks with it. The game began in Japan on the Famicom, and the cartridge release gave American players a tidy version of the classic, also known as Reversi.

It is quiet and unflashy by NES standards, and that is exactly its appeal: a thinking game for a rainy afternoon, a way to settle a family rivalry, and a neat piece of the console's board game library.
