Game + manual: the cartridge and its manual, no box. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Othello is a game of sudden reversals, where a single well-placed disc can flip a whole row of white to black, and Atari's 2600 cartridge captures that satisfying swing nicely. The rules take a minute to learn: place a disc so that it traps a line of your opponent's pieces between two of your own, and every trapped piece flips to your color. Learning where to play, and why the corners matter so much, takes a good deal longer.

The cartridge has a great backstory. It was programmed by Ed Logg, the Atari arcade programmer who had just worked on Asteroids and would go on to Centipede and Gauntlet, with the visuals handled by Carol Shaw, later the designer of River Raid. Logg had studied artificial intelligence at the Stanford AI Lab, so building a computer opponent for a classic strategy game was a natural fit, and squeezing a capable Othello player into a console with just 128 bytes of RAM is a quiet feat of early programming.

You can play the computer at four skill levels or plug in a second joystick and let a friend take the other color while the cartridge keeps track of every flip. You can also set up your own board positions to study, a feature critics of the day singled out for praise. For a 2600 collector it is an early Atari board-game conversion with two of the company's most celebrated programmers behind it, and for anyone who enjoys a quiet, thoughtful game on original hardware it still makes for a fine evening.

About the game

Othello is a conversion of the board game. Each player tries to fill the game board with as many discs of his color as possible. On each turn the player places a disc on the board by selecting a location where the opponents discs will become trapped between two of his discs. The trapped discs are flipped over to the players color. The game ends when the board is filled or time runs out, and the player with the greatest number of his color discs on the board wins. Two players can play against each other, or one player against the computer.
