Item Description
Somewhere on the long road west, the station wagon is running low on gas, a friend has just been bitten, and the only town for miles is crawling with the undead. Welcome to Organ Trail, a game that takes the most famous educational computer game of all time and asks what the trip would look like after a zombie apocalypse.
The Men Who Wear Many Hats began Organ Trail as a free browser game, a sharp parody of The Oregon Trail, then built it out into the Director's Cut after a successful Kickstarter. The goal is Safe Haven, a sanctuary on the far side of a ruined America, and getting there means rationing food, ammunition, medicine, fuel, scrap and money while keeping your four companions alive and healthy.
The road is full of choose-your-own-adventure events, and the resource juggling is broken up with action: scavenging runs where you fend off the dead, repairs to keep the wagon rolling, and boss fights added for the Director's Cut. Deaths come often and are darkly funny, and no two trips play out the same way.
Its chunky pixel art and bleeping soundtrack call back to the school computer labs where so many players first met The Oregon Trail, which is half the joke and half the charm. Released on the Vita in 2015 as Organ Trail: Complete Edition, it fits the handheld perfectly: runs are short, tense and endlessly replayable, and the gallows humor lands every bit as well in your hands as it did in a browser window.
