Item Description

Five games on one disc, and two of them changed what first-person games could be. Valve's Orange Box arrived in 2007 with Half-Life 2, its two follow-up Episodes, the debut of Team Fortress 2 and a short, strange puzzle game called Portal that turned into a phenomenon almost overnight. On PlayStation 3 the collection was converted by EA's UK studio, giving Sony's console the full package in a single case.

Half-Life 2 is the anchor. Gordon Freeman steps off a train into City 17, a European city under the boot of the alien Combine, and the game never stops finding new ways to play: the Gravity Gun turns saw blades and radiators into weapons, Ravenholm is a horror detour nobody forgets, and the airboat and buggy stretches open the world up between firefights. Alyx Vance gives the story a heart, and Dr. Breen's broadcasts give it a voice. Episode One picks up in the collapsing Citadel, and Episode Two heads out to the White Forest for a climactic defense against Striders and the agile Hunters, ending on the cliffhanger fans have been talking about ever since.

Portal is the surprise. Armed with a gun that links two surfaces, Chell works through Aperture Science test chambers while GLaDOS, an AI with a dry sense of humor and a murderous streak, narrates her progress. It runs only a few hours, introduced the Weighted Companion Cube and ends with Jonathan Coulton's song "Still Alive", and its success led directly to Portal 2. Team Fortress 2 rounds things out with nine cartoonish classes and a look inspired by mid-century illustration, built around online team play.

Few compilations hold this much design history. On a PS3, the Orange Box is the way to play Half-Life 2 and the original Portal on Sony hardware, and a neat snapshot of the moment Valve's games crossed over to PlayStation.
