Item Description
Set sail on the Going Merry, choose an island on the Grand Line, and beat whoever is waiting there so thoroughly that they sign on with your crew. That loop is the heart of One Piece: Grand Adventure, Ganbarion's 2006 follow-up to Grand Battle!, and it turns a straightforward anime brawler into something closer to a pirate RPG.
Adventure mode is the reason to play. Each voyage runs ten levels of sailing and island hopping, and the fights you win can recruit defeated characters to your side or open up mini-games along the way. Every character you send into battle earns experience and levels up, raising HP, attack and defense, so your favorite Straw Hats grow stronger the longer you stick with them. It gives the single-player side a sense of progress that most licensed fighters never bother with.
The fighting keeps the Grand Battle formula of fast, flashy 3D brawls powered by moves lifted straight from the series, from Luffy's stretching Gum-Gum attacks to Zoro's swordplay and Sanji's kicks, and it builds on the earlier game with more characters, more stages and more features. It was also made specifically for the North American market rather than adapted from a Japanese release, an unusual path for a One Piece game of that era.
Reviews landed in the middle, around 70 on Metacritic for the GameCube version, with critics split between those who enjoyed the crew-building and those who wanted deeper combat. Still, it is one of only a handful of One Piece games that came to the GameCube in North America, and turning a ragtag roster into a leveled-up crew is a satisfying grind. Hand a friend the second controller and it doubles as a head-to-head anime fighter for the couch.
