Item Description

Hold a button and the world freezes into parchment. In Ōkami, that moment is the game: the screen becomes a canvas, and a single stroke of the Celestial Brush can slice an enemy in half, bring a withered tree into bloom, light a fuse or summon the sun back into a black sky. Few games have tied what you do so closely to how it looks, and twenty years later it still feels like nothing else.

You play as Amaterasu, the Shinto sun goddess, taking the form of a white wolf to save the land of Nippon from a curse that has drained it of life and color. At her side rides Issun, a tiny, wisecracking wandering artist who provides much of the game's humor. The journey begins in Kamiki Village and builds to a confrontation with the eight-headed serpent Orochi, and that is only the opening act of a long, generous adventure steeped in Japanese myth and folklore. Restoring a cursed region in a single burst of flowers, grass and color is one of the most joyful sights of its console generation.

New brush techniques come from the thirteen celestial brush gods hidden across the world, and every one opens up new puzzles, new paths and new ways to fight, from winds that clear poisonous mist to bombs drawn straight onto the battlefield. Combat mixes those strokes with sacred weapons that can be swapped on the fly, and side activities like feeding animals and helping villagers fill the world with small, warm rewards. The visual style, inspired by sumi-e ink painting with a cel-shaded finish, gives every scene the look of a moving scroll.

Developed by Clover Studio under director Hideki Kamiya and published by Capcom in 2006, Ōkami won near-universal acclaim, including Game of the Year honors from IGN, yet sold modestly at first, and Clover closed soon afterward. Its reputation only grew through later Wii and HD releases, but this PlayStation 2 disc is the original release, the version that introduced the world to Amaterasu and the brush.

About the game

Set sometime in classical Japanese history, Ōkami combines several Japanese mythology and folklore to tell the story of how the land was saved from darkness by the Shinto sun goddess named Amaterasu, who took the form of a white wolf with celestial markings covering its fur. It features a distinct sumi-e-inspired cel-shaded visual style and the Celestial Brush, a gesture-system used to perform miracles.
