In Activision's telling of the fairy tale, the Big Bad Wolf has a full name, Bigelow B. Wolf, and he does not give up. Oink! puts you inside each of the Three Little Pigs' houses in turn, straw first, then sticks, then bricks, while Bigelow huffs and puffs holes into the wall below. Your pig scurries back and forth, grabbing pieces from the supply overhead and dropping them into the gaps before they widen. If the wolf's breath catches your pig he is stunned, and once a hole grows big enough he tumbles right through it and the next house takes over.
It is a frantic, funny juggling act. Patches grow more valuable with every new row, but the wolf gets tougher the longer you last, so choosing which hole to plug first becomes the whole game. Designer Mike Lorenzen added a terrific two-player twist as well: in Game 3 one player defends as the pigs while the other plays the wolf, trading roles each time a pig is caught. A first-row patch earns just 4 points while a third-row patch earns 12, so holding out a little longer always pays.
Its sense of humor won Oink! the Most Humorous Video Game/Computer Game award at the 1984 Arkie Awards, and it carries classic Activision touches such as the old Oinkers club, whose patch went to players who photographed a score above 25,000. It never had the fame of Pitfall! or River Raid, which is exactly what makes it a fun find: a bright, original score-attack game that rewards quick hands and a calm head, and a distinctive corner of Activision's 2600 library.
Oink! is based on the fairy tale of the three little pigs. The big bad wolf is trying to blow down each of the pigs houses. You control each pig one at a time. The wolf is at the bottom of the screen and will blow a hole in the house one section at a time. Each time a hole is formed, the pig must patch it up quickly so the wolf can't get in. New materials are located at the top of the screen, and you need to grab them and place them in the holes as they are formed. The longer you last, the tougher the wolf will become! You start the game controlling the pig whose house is made of straw; when he is caught, you move on to the pig in the house made of sticks. Finally you will control the pig in the house made of bricks. When all three pigs have been caught by the wolf, the game is over.
