Item Description

Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen opens by reading your fortune. Before the war begins, a wizard lays out tarot cards and asks a series of moral questions, and your answers shape the leader you will become. It is a fitting start for a game where every decision echoes, and the first sign that this Super Nintendo strategy RPG was something unusually ambitious.

Created by Yasumi Matsuno at Quest and released in North America in 1993 by Enix America, it puts you in command of a rebel army rising against the Zeteginean Empire and its sorceress queen, Endora. Battles unfold on large real-time maps where you dispatch units across the land to liberate towns, claim temples and close in on enemy strongholds. When forces collide, combat plays out automatically based on your formations and the tactics you assign, so the real skill lies in building squads, choosing who leads them and sending the right units out at the right time of day, since some creatures grow stronger after nightfall.

The game's deepest idea is reputation. Liberating towns honorably and fighting fair raises your standing with the people, while leaning on dark units or bullying weaker foes drags it down, and those values decide which characters will join your cause and which of its many endings you earn. Tarot cards turn up as you free towns and can be played in battle for dramatic effects, and the music by Hitoshi Sakimoto and Masaharu Iwata gives the campaign a grand, melancholy sweep. Even the title is a nod to a Queen song.

This is where the Ogre series began, leading directly to Tactics Ogre and Ogre Battle 64, and Matsuno later carried its political storytelling to Square with Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story. On its original cartridge it is the source of that whole lineage: a demanding, replayable strategy epic whose branching paths make each campaign feel like your own war story.
