Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. This is a Japanese release; the packaging and game text are primarily in Japanese. The photos are of this exact copy — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

In July 1999, more than a year before Atlus brought it to North America, Japanese players were already leading Magnus Gallant's Blue Knights into civil war. This is the original Japanese release of Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber, published by Nintendo itself and developed by Quest, the studio behind the Ogre Battle saga.

The road to release was a long one. Announced in 1997 as Ogre Battle 3 and once considered for the 64DD add-on, it ended up as a 320-megabit cartridge and the series' first step into 3D. The story follows Magnus, a young captain fresh from the Ischka Military Academy, sent to the southern region of Palatinus just as a revolution led by Frederick Raskin begins to tear the kingdom apart. Loyalty to his noble birth, or to the common people suffering under it: the game makes you live with that choice.

On the map, you split your battalion into units of up to five, choose leaders and formations, and move them across wide regions in real time to seize strongholds. Clashes resolve automatically on an isometric battlefield, so victory comes from preparation: the right classes in the right positions, sensible tactics, and a roster that deepens as characters change class. How your army conducts the war feeds the hidden Chaos Frame, which steers the campaign toward a Lawful, Neutral or Chaotic ending, and the score by Hayato Matsuo, Masaharu Iwata and Hitoshi Sakimoto carries the drama from the first skirmish to the last.

Famitsu scored it 33 out of 40, and the English release later won GameSpot's best strategy game award for 2000. This Japanese edition is where it all started, with its original Japanese script and presentation, and it makes a natural centerpiece for an import shelf or a striking companion to the North American cartridge. Because the game leans heavily on story and menus, it suits players comfortable with Japanese or fans who already know the English version well.

About the game

"Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber is a tactical RPG for the Nintendo 64. Featuring a gripping storyline with multiple possible endings, and a genre-defining character class system, this strategic epic has rightly retained its place in the hearts of tactical RPG fans for over a decade. The game tells the story of Magnus Gallant, a recently graduated officer of the Palatinean Army who is assigned to the troubled southern region of his native land. There he witnesses the plight of the lower classes – the victims of a tyrannical ruling elite whose only thought is for the preservation of their own lofty status. With civil war brewing, Magnus is faced with a terrible choice: to betray his own noble origins in the name of liberty, or turn a blind eye to the evils of his rotten society."
