Pick one of eight travelers to begin, and the rest of Solistia's cast will find their way to you. Octopath Traveler II is a fresh start rather than a continuation: a new continent, a new era of steam engines and ocean voyages, and eight new protagonists with stories of their own. Hikari is a warrior prince wrestling with a darkness in his bloodline, Throné is a thief trying to break free of the criminal family that raised her, Osvald is a scholar escaping a prison island to take revenge, and Temenos is a cleric investigating a murder inside his own church.

The HD-2D style that Square Enix built with developer Acquire is richer than ever here, with pixel-art characters moving through dioramas full of depth, weather and dramatic lighting. The biggest new wrinkle is the day and night cycle. A single button switches the hour, changing who is walking the streets, what music plays and which path action each traveler can use, so every town has two sides to explore. Combat keeps the excellent Break and Boost system, where you probe enemy weaknesses to shatter their shields and bank Boost Points for a devastating turn, and adds Latent Powers, a special ability for each traveler that charges as they fight.

The first game was sometimes criticized for keeping its heroes apart, and this sequel answers with Crossed Paths chapters that pair travelers together in shared stories. Secondary jobs open up wild party builds, a ship lets you sail between Solistia's two continents, and the side stories reward anyone who stops to talk with townsfolk. Yasunori Nishiki returns as composer, and his soundtrack gives each traveler's theme and every battle a sweeping, orchestral lift that suits the scale of the journey.

Because it stands completely on its own, Octopath Traveler II is an easy place to start for players new to the series, and a clear step forward for those who loved the original's look and combat. It shows off everything Square Enix's modern take on 16-bit-style role-playing can be: eight stories, one beautifully crafted world and dozens of hours of classic turn-based strategy.
