A letter from a vanished father, an old notebook and a mysterious necklace: Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas starts with almost nothing, then hands a young boy a sword, a shield and a sea full of islands to explore. Finnish studio Cornfox & Bros. made no secret of its inspirations, and the result is an affectionate homage to classic top-down Zelda adventures, re-imagined in a 3D isometric view and spread across the archipelago of the Uncharted Seas.
Each island works like its own small puzzle box. Some corners stay out of reach until you return with the right tool, so coming back with bombs or a bow in hand becomes a reward in itself. Jungles, deserts and swamps hide caves, looping paths, block-pushing puzzles and treasure, and the swordplay has a satisfying weight, with items and spells always close at hand. Gathering ancient emblems and learning magic steadily expands what the silent hero can do as the mystery of the ancient kingdom of Arcadia and the sea monster Oceanhorn comes into focus.
The soundtrack is a highlight. Kalle Ylitalo wrote the score, joined by guest compositions from two giants of Japanese RPG music, Nobuo Uematsu of Final Fantasy fame and Kenji Ito of the SaGa series, giving the sailing and the island villages a warm, classic sound that suits the adventure's old-school heart.
Oceanhorn began on iOS in 2013 and found a natural home on the Vita in 2017, where physical buttons make the combat feel right. On the handheld it offers the kind of compact, satisfying adventure the system was made for. It also launched a series, later followed by the prequel Oceanhorn 2: Knights of the Lost Realm, which makes this first voyage the place where the world of Arcadia began.
You wake up and find a letter from your father. He is gone… The only lead is his old notebook and a mysterious necklace. What happened? Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas combines captivating storytelling, breathtaking 3D visuals and exciting gameplay into one epic action-adventure experience. In the game you explore the islands of Uncharted Seas, a world filled with many dangers, puzzles and secrets. You must fight monsters, learn to use magic and discover ancient treasures, which will help you on your quest. Use all of your wits and skill to unravel the mysteries of the ancient kingdom of Arcadia and the sea monster, Oceanhorn.
