Item Description

Norse by Norsewest: The Return of the Lost Vikings is the sequel to The Lost Vikings, the puzzle-platformer that won over a generation of players in the early 1990s. The series comes from Blizzard Entertainment, the studio behind Warcraft and Diablo, which developed the Super Nintendo version of this sequel. This Sega Saturn version, like the PlayStation and PC releases, was developed by Beam Software and published by Interplay in 1997. Erik the Swift, Baleog the Fierce and Olaf the Stout are swept through time once more for another round of brain-bending cooperative puzzle action, and clearing a stage means thinking carefully about how to use each Viking's abilities in tandem. The humor is sharp and the level design is clever.

What sets the Saturn version apart is its presentation. Where the SNES version kept the cartoon style of the first game, the Saturn, PlayStation and PC versions use pre-rendered 3D graphics, CD music and extensive voice acting, with Rob Paulsen as Erik and Jeff Bennett as Baleog and Fang, while the puzzles themselves are the same across versions. The Vikings come equipped with new gear this time: Erik's turbo boots launch him higher and smash through certain overhead walls, Baleog's bionic arm strikes enemies from a distance, swings from hooks and grabs out-of-reach items, and Olaf can shrink to squeeze through tiny gaps, hang-glide, or propel himself upward with a well-timed fart. Working out which Viking's tool cracks each obstacle, and in what order, is where the puzzle design shines.

Norse by Norsewest also introduced two new playable characters, Scorch the dragon and Fang the werewolf, expanding the roster and adding new mechanics that keep even veterans of the original on their toes. Fang climbs walls with his claws and slashes at close range, while Scorch shoots fireballs that damage enemies and trigger switches, and can fly until he tires before gliding back down. The writing is genuinely funny, and the variety of environments keeps the adventure feeling fresh from world to world, making this a distinctive Saturn take on one of Blizzard's earliest series.
