Nioh began life as a project based on an unfinished Akira Kurosawa script and spent more than a decade in development before Team Ninja, the studio behind Ninja Gaiden, finally brought it to PlayStation 4 in 2017. The wait produced something distinctive: a samurai action RPG with the punishing structure of Dark Souls and Team Ninja's own ferocious, technical combat, set in a version of Japan's Warring States period overrun by yokai.
Its hero, William, is inspired by William Adams, the real English sailor who became a samurai in the service of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Here he pursues the sinister alchemist Edward Kelley from the Tower of London to Japan, where Kelley is harvesting amrita, a spirit stone with the power to sway the war. Along the way William fights beside and against famous figures of the age, Ieyasu and Hattori Hanzo among them, as the story builds toward the Battle of Sekigahara.
Combat is where Nioh earns its reputation. William shifts between high, mid and low stances on the fly, trading power for speed and defense, across weapons from the katana and spear to the axe and kusarigama. Every swing drains Ki, Team Ninja's take on stamina, and a well-timed Ki Pulse after a combo wins some of it back, a rhythm that turns skilled play into a flowing cycle of attack and recovery. Guardian spirits grant a powerful Living Weapon state, and a deep loot system with rarities and set bonuses keeps builds evolving for dozens of hours.
The bosses, from the hulking Onryoki that awaits on William's first mission in Japan to Kelley himself, are relentless tests of pattern and nerve, and missions are compact, interconnected levels dotted with shrines and with tiny forest spirits called Kodama to find and send home. It was built with online co-op summoning in mind, but its challenge is every bit as rewarding alone. Nioh was a critical hit that grew into a franchise with Nioh 2, and this original is where its blend of samurai history, folklore and razor-edged precision began.

About the game
In Nioh, players will traverse war-torn Japan as William, a blonde-haired swordsman whose background as a fierce warrior and seasoned knowledge of the blade allows him to survive in the demon-plagued land of the samurai. Known as Yokai, these demons inhabit a number of dangerous locations and lie in wait in the shadows to ambush unsuspecting victims. Players will also face off with other samurai in supernatural sword battles and intense, multi-target engagements offering a level of difficulty that will truly test even the most hardened samurai’s skills, patience, and strategy. Offering a deep and original storyline that takes place during the Warring States Period of Japanese history alongside strategic sword-fighting action, Nioh will challenge players in a way that makes every mission and accomplishment feel earned and worthwhile.
