Item Description

Before the internet, the only ways through Death Mountain were a friend's advice, a lot of patience, or a copy of Nintendo Power. Volume 4 makes Zelda II: The Adventure of Link its lead feature, catching the game in its first winter in North American homes, when players were still figuring out what to make of it.

Zelda II was the series' boldest left turn: side-scrolling sword duels, experience levels for attack, magic and life, spells like Jump and Fairy, and towns full of villagers dropping cryptic hints. It was tough, strange and unforgettable, exactly the kind of game a young magazine was built to explain.

The rest of the issue is pure early NES. Features cover WrestleMania, Skate or Die and Sesame Street 1-2-3. Classified Information has tricks for Mega Man, Blaster Master, Bionic Commando, Double Dragon and Life Force, and Counselors' Corner fields questions on Metal Gear, Tecmo Bowl and Marble Madness. The Pak Watch list of upcoming games is a time capsule of its own, with Ninja Gaiden, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Tetris, Faxanadu and The Guardian Legend all still on the horizon.

This is Nintendo Power from its bimonthly first year, before the formula settled, when every page felt like a dispatch straight from Redmond. It anchors a Zelda print collection and fills one of the earliest slots in a Nintendo Power run.
