Item Description

Wario was never interested in saving anyone. When Mario's greedy rival finally got a game of his own, it was all about coins, treasure and a castle to buy with the loot, and Nintendo Power Volume 58 gave Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 the cover. The Game Boy adventure let Wario shoulder-bash his way through enemies and swap hats for new powers: a bull helmet for charging and clinging to ceilings, a jet pot for short bursts of flight and a dragon hat that breathes fire. It was a cheeky reinvention of the Mario formula, and the issue caught it right as it arrived.

Beyond the cover story, the issue is a snapshot of early 1994 at full speed. Strategy features cover NBA Jam, Wolfenstein 3-D, Super R-Type III, Metal Marines, The Flintstones: The Treasure of Sierra Madrock and the second part of the Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics II coverage, with a preview of Stunt Race FX. There's a Winter CES report, the Nester Awards nominees and a Metroid comic, while Classified Information serves up tricks for Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, SimAnt, Super Mario All-Stars and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.

Paging through it now, you can feel how wide Nintendo's world was that spring: arcade conversions, PC shooters on the Super NES, Super FX experiments and a brand-new Game Boy platformer, all treated like headline news. Wario's first starring role makes this a natural cornerstone for a Game Boy print collection or a Nintendo Power run filling in its 1994 volumes.
