Item Description

Swap two blocks, line up three, and watch the chain reaction cascade down the screen. Tetris Attack is pure puzzle adrenaline, and Nintendo Power Volume 87 gave it the August 1996 cover. Developed by Intelligent Systems, it reworked Japan's Panel de Pon with Yoshi and the cast of Yoshi's Island, and despite the name it plays nothing like Tetris: its head-to-head mode turns combos and chains into garbage blocks raining down on an opponent.

The issue lands right at the hand-off between generations. Super Mario 64 gets full coverage weeks before the Nintendo 64 reached North America, a special feature covers the system's Japanese launch, and Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey gets its own spotlight. Meanwhile Kirby Super Star, FIFA Soccer '97 and Urban Strike keep the Super NES busy, previews look ahead to Donkey Kong Land 2 and Mole Mania, and Counselors' Corner digs into Chrono Trigger and Donkey Kong Country 2.

Tetris Attack was one of the last great puzzle games of the Super NES era, and its cover sharing an issue with Nintendo's first big N64 push captures 1996 perfectly. It makes a colorful addition to a Yoshi collection or a Nintendo Power run bridging the 16-bit and 64-bit years.
