Item Description

Few openings hit as hard as Samus answering a distress call, racing back to Ceres Station and finding the scientists dead and the last Metroid gone. Super Metroid built an entire planet of quiet dread around that start, and Nintendo Power Volume 60 gave it the May 1994 cover as Samus made her Super NES debut, hunting through Zebes for Ridley and Mother Brain.

The rest of the issue shows the Super NES in its prime with a glimpse of what came next. Reviews cover The King of Dragons, Knights of the Round, Joe & Mac 2, Spectre and The Jetsons: Invasion of the Planet Pirates; special features cover the Nester Awards results and the new Super Game Boy; and the issue also reports on Project Reality, the hardware that would become the Nintendo 64. Classified Information has codes for NBA Jam, Mega Man X and TMNT Tournament Fighters, while Counselors' Corner tackles Mega Man X, Wario Land and a step-by-step guide to Crystalis.

Super Metroid's reputation has only grown since, and it has become a touchstone for a whole genre of exploration games. The cover that greeted it in 1994 is a fitting way to honor that, on a Metroid shelf or in a Nintendo Power run.
