Item Description

After a starring turn in the movie The Wizard and months of playground rumors, Super Mario Bros. 3 finally reached North American stores in early 1990, and Nintendo Power Volume 11 was ready with the cover. The March/April 1990 issue leads with Mario's raccoon-tailed adventure, a game packed with Tanooki Suits, Frog Suits, warp whistles and eight worlds of Koopaling-captained airships that kids spent the rest of the year mapping out on notebook paper.

The surrounding pages are a time capsule of the NES at its peak. Features cover Silent Service, Pinbot, 720°, A Boy and His Blob, Wrath of the Black Manta and Astyanax; previews look ahead to Final Fantasy, Code Name: Viper and Super C; and a report from the 1990 Consumer Electronics Show rounds out the news. Counselors' Corner takes on Willow, DuckTales, Shadowgate and River City Ransom, Classified Information shares codes for Punch-Out!!, Mega Man II and Double Dragon II, and the Game Boy section covers Nemesis and Heiankyo Alien.

Nintendo Power would go on to devote a full strategy guide to Super Mario Bros. 3 later in 1990, but Volume 11 captures the launch moment itself. It anchors a Mario collection nicely and fills a key slot in the bimonthly early years of a Nintendo Power run.
