Item Description

One hundred and twenty Power Stars, fifteen main courses and a castle full of paintings you can jump into: by September 1996, Super Mario 64 was no longer a preview, it was the reason to own a Nintendo 64. Nintendo Power Volume 88 marked the system's North American launch with a ten-page Super Mario 64 feature and an eight-page look at Pilotwings 64, the two games that greeted N64 owners on day one.

A special launch report, headlined “Blast Off To The Future,” covers the N64's arrival, with updates on Cruis'n USA and Turok: Dinosaur Hunter. Pak Watch is a treat for gaming historians, teasing Star Fox 64, Wave Race 64, Tetrisphere, Kirby's Air Ride and a kart racer still listed as Super Mario Kart R before it shipped as Mario Kart 64. The Super NES and Game Boy aren't forgotten either, with full coverage of Realm, Kirby Super Star and Donkey Kong Land 2, a preview of Donkey Kong Country 3, and Epic Center pages on SimCity and Secret of Evermore.

Where Volume 85 built the hype, this is the issue where the promise turned into a cartridge you could actually buy. It belongs on the same shelf as the console and the game it celebrates, right at the start of Nintendo's leap into 3D.
