Item Description

Before most players had ever touched an analog stick, Nintendo Power Volume 85 was already promising a new kind of Mario. The June 1996 cover belongs to Super Mario 64, and the issue's N64 Exclusive section reads like a roll call of the system's early years: Blast Corps, Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, Doom 64, Body Harvest, GoldenEye, Cruis'n USA, Pilotwings 64 and Wave Race 64, all shown months ahead of the console's North American launch.

The 16-bit world still gets its due. Super Mario RPG, Kirby's Block Ball and Frank Thomas Baseball turn up in the Arena, Epic Center covers Lufia II and Final Fantasy III, Pak Watch points toward Donkey Kong Country 3 and Kirby Super Star, and Counselors' Corner helps with Breath of Fire II and A Link to the Past. Full coverage of Toy Story, Olympic Summer Games and Ken Griffey Jr.'s Winning Run rounds out the Super NES pages.

Reading it now is a little like time travel. GoldenEye is just one name on a list, and the jump to 3D is still a promise rather than something you could hold. This is the issue that bottled the anticipation right before the Nintendo 64 changed how games played, and it pairs naturally with Volume 88's launch-month Mario cover in a Nintendo 64 era collection.
