Item Description

Polygons were still a novelty on home consoles in the summer of 1994, and Nintendo Power Volume 63 treats Stunt Race FX like the event it was. Nintendo's Super FX racer put chunky 3D cars with big cartoon eyes on the Super NES, bounding over jumps, ramps and banked turns, and the August 1994 issue gave it the cover and a spot in the month's reviews.

The rest of the issue is a snapshot of a crowded Super NES summer. Part two of a Secret of Mana special continues the magazine's look at Square's action RPG, a Behind the Scenes piece goes inside Shaq Fu, and the review pages run from Lord of the Rings, Vol. 1 and King of the Monsters 2 to The Death and Return of Superman and Sonic Blastman 2, with Game Boy stops for Itchy & Scratchy and RoboCop vs. The Terminator. Classified Information digs up codes for Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Wolfenstein 3D, and Counselors' Corner takes on Paladin's Quest and the Game Boy Donkey Kong.

Reading it now is a reminder of how strange and exciting that moment felt. A few months before Donkey Kong Country and well ahead of the Nintendo 64, Nintendo was already showing what 3D could look like on the console under your TV. File it next to a copy of Stunt Race FX or Star Fox, or slot it into a mid-'90s Nintendo Power run.
