Item Description

A kid from Seattle, a yo-yo and an island chain full of secrets: StarTropics was Nintendo's own action-adventure made with Western players in mind, released in North America but never in Japan. Nintendo Power Volume 21 puts it on the cover, and the magazine's Powerline even pitched hero Mike Jones as destined to join Nintendo's super heroes like Link and Mario. The game sends Mike searching for his missing uncle, Dr. Jones, through tile-jumping dungeon puzzles and island villages, with the famous letter you had to dip in water to reveal a code that still gets talked about today.

The surrounding issue is a strong early-1991 mix. Features cover TMNT II: The Arcade Game, Kabuki Quantum Fighter, Magician and Ultima: Quest of the Avatar, and Game Boy readers get a basketball roundup with Double Dribble: 5 on 5 and NBA All-Star Challenge. Classified Information serves up tips for Crystalis, Journey to Silius and Super Mario Bros. 3, and Pak Watch runs a Super Famicom showcase, an early look at the 16-bit hardware Nintendo would launch in North America that August.

Mike Jones never got the long-running series that Link and Mario did, which makes this issue a charming time capsule of the moment Nintendo hoped he might.
