Item Description

Star Trek turned 25 in 1991, and that October the franchise beamed onto the cover of Nintendo Power Volume 29. It is a fun crossover moment for Trek fans, with the Enterprise crew sharing pages with the plumbers, ninjas and space hunters of Nintendo’s world.

The timing makes this issue especially interesting. The Super NES had launched in North America only weeks earlier, and the issue’s SNES Showcase covers Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts, Super R-Type and HAL’s Hole in One Golf, while F-Zero gets a feature of its own. The NES is still very much alive, with features on ShatterHand and Roger Clemens’ MVP Baseball, and the Game Boy section covers Castlevania II: Belmont’s Revenge. Now Playing takes in Pilotwings, Captain America and the Avengers and Pirates!, and Counselor’s Corner tackles Maniac Mansion, Star Wars and The Uninvited.

Reading it today is like watching a changing of the guard in real time, with a pop-culture legend on the cover and Nintendo’s 16-bit future spilling out across the pages inside. It earns a place beside both a Nintendo Power run and a shelf of Star Trek memorabilia.
