Item Description

Sherwood Forest went 8-bit in the summer of Kevin Costner's Robin Hood film, when Nintendo Power Volume 26 put the NES adaptation of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves on the cover. The game, developed by Sculptured Software and published by Virgin Games, was more ambitious than most movie tie-ins. It mixed overhead exploration from a home camp in Sherwood with side-view, one-on-one sword duels, large-scale melee battles between Robin's band and the Sheriff's soldiers, and even a horse race. Its loose equipment system let characters wield almost anything as a weapon, including the chicken leg Duncan carries when he joins the band.

The rest of the issue is a fun mid-1991 mix. Features cover Rockin' Kats, Capcom's The Little Mermaid and Bill & Ted's Excellent Video Game Adventure, along with a look at the Super NES ahead of its North American launch that August. Game Boy coverage includes Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Navy Seals, Dick Tracy and Blades of Steel, and Classified Information has tips for Little Nemo: The Dream Master, Low G Man, Silver Surfer and The Simpsons.

Bows, swords and the first glimpse of the 16-bit era make Volume 26 a lively souvenir of the NES's final summer as Nintendo's only home console in North America.
