Item Description

Picture a futuristic city run by a hijacked supercomputer, six sectors to infiltrate in any order, and a hero armed with a boomerang that flies in eight directions. That is Power Blade, Taito's NES action game and the cover star of Nintendo Power Volume 23. As security chief NOVA, you track down a contact in each sector to get an ID card, fight through to the security room and defeat a guard boss for a data tape before taking on the Control Center. Upgrades boost the boomerang's power, range and count, and the Power Suit lets NOVA fire blades that cut through walls. The North American game was a substantially reworked version of the Japanese Power Blazer, with new levels and a redesigned hero, and it has gathered a loyal following among NES action fans.

Spring 1991 also brings features on Totally Rad, Sword Master, S.C.A.T. and Monopoly, while Game Boy coverage includes The Sword of Hope, R-Type, WWF Superstars and Pac-Man. Now Playing reviews The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants and Double Dragon III, and Pak Watch looks ahead to Mega Man 4, Ninja Gaiden III, Battletoads, Tecmo Super Bowl and a Super NES game then called Final Fantasy II.

Underrated NES action on the cover and a sneak peek at some of the era's biggest sequels inside make Volume 23 a rewarding find.
