Item Description

Long before cinematic storytelling was standard in action games, Ninja Gaiden stopped between stages to play out dramatic, anime-style scenes. Tecmo called it its cinema display, and paired with fierce, precise action it turned Ryu Hayabusa's quest for the truth behind his father's death into an NES legend. Nintendo Power Volume 5 puts that game on the cover. Ryu clings to walls, leaps between them and unleashes ninja arts like the windmill throwing star and the Art of the Fire Wheel, and the game's late stages are infamous for sending players all the way back if they fall to the final bosses. A guide was a lifeline in 1989.

Volume 5 comes from the magazine's early bimonthly era, and the surrounding pages show the NES library in a golden stretch. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link and Hudson's Adventure Island also get features, and the previews spotlight Strider, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Adventures of Bayou Billy and Cobra Triangle. Pak Watch's upcoming list reads like a wish list of future favorites, including Mega Man II, DuckTales, Faxanadu, Dragon Warrior and The Guardian Legend.

Early issues like this one are where Nintendo Power's reputation was built, and having Ryu Hayabusa leap across the cover makes Volume 5 a standout among them.
