Item Description

Samus Aran’s second mission took her somewhere unexpected: the small green screen of the Game Boy. Metroid II: Return of Samus sends her to SR388, the Metroids’ home world, with orders to wipe out the species, and its claustrophobic hunt through caverns, along with debuts like the Spider Ball, made it far more than a pocket-sized spin-off.

Nintendo Power Volume 31, from December 1991, puts Metroid on the cover and covers Metroid II in its Game Boy section alongside Ninja Gaiden Shadow and Hudson’s Adventure Island. It was the first holiday season for the Super NES in North America, and the issue shows it: ActRaiser gets a feature, while the SNES pages cover Pilotwings and Populous. Batman: Return of the Joker, The Addams Family and Tiny Toon Adventures fill out the features, Classified Information digs into Battletoads, Super Mario World and Darius Twin, and Counselor’s Corner tackles Crystalis, StarTropics and The Goonies II.

For Metroid fans it is a lovely artifact of the series’ handheld chapter, and it captures the winter when 8-bit, 16-bit and portable Nintendo games all competed for the same wish lists.
