Item Description

With a single gravity flip, the M-308 Gunner can walk the ceiling, and that one idea turns every stage of Metal Storm into a two-sided puzzle of gunfire and footing. Irem’s mech shooter was a late, technically ambitious NES release, and Nintendo Power Volume 22 gave it the cover in March 1991 with a strategy feature to match.

The rest of the issue is a terrific spread of the NES at its height. Features cover StarTropics, Hudson’s Adventure Island II, G.I. Joe and Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom, the Game Boy section brings Operation C, and Classified Information serves up tricks for Mega Man 3, Silver Surfer, TMNT: The Arcade Game, NARC and Shadow of the Ninja. Counselor’s Corner helps with Maniac Mansion and Dragon Warrior II.

Pak Watch is the hidden gem here, teasing Battletoads, SimCity and a Super NES Final Fantasy II, along with a nod to Earth Bound, the NES adventure that Nintendo of America did not release at the time. Metal Storm went on to become a cult favorite among NES fans, and this issue catches it in the spotlight it deserved.
