Item Description

Few Super NES adventures carry the melancholy and curiosity of Illusion of Gaia, Quintet’s journey across a world dotted with echoes of real places like the Nazca plains, Angkor Wat and the Great Wall. Young Will, his flute and his ability to become the dark knight Freedan made it an action RPG unlike anything else on the system, and Nintendo Power Volume 65 gave it the cover in October 1994.

The issue around it is a snapshot of the 16-bit era at full strength. Reviews cover Super Punch-Out!!, Final Fantasy III, Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Brain Lord, plus Mega Man V and Mortal Kombat II on Game Boy. Special features spotlight Cruis’n USA and preview Donkey Kong Country, weeks before Rare’s game changed expectations of what the Super NES could do. Counselor’s Corner takes on Super Metroid and Breath of Fire, and Classified Information runs from Sunset Riders to The King of Dragons.

Autumn 1994 sits right at the summit of the Super NES years, and few single issues pack in this much of it. Pair it with a copy of Illusion of Gaia, or simply flip through it for the sheer density of classics competing for space on every page.
