Item Description

Cecil begins his story as a Dark Knight carrying out orders he can no longer stomach, and the Super NES role-playing game built around him changed what console RPGs could feel like. Released in North America as Final Fantasy II (it is Final Fantasy IV in Japan), Square's epic introduced the Active Time Battle system and a cast of friends, rivals and traitors, from Kain to Rosa to the menacing Golbez. Nintendo Power Volume 30 gives it a feature in November 1991, just months after the Super NES launched.

That launch-window feel runs through the whole issue. An SNES showcase covers Super Tennis, U.N. Squadron and Super Baseball Simulator 1.000, while the NES still dominates with The Flintstones, Where in Time Is Carmen Sandiego? and Tom & Jerry. Game Boy fans get Battletoads, Kid Icarus and Faceball 2000. Classified Information has tricks for Pilotwings, Final Fight and Gradius III, and Counselors' Corner takes on Metal Gear and Destiny of an Emperor.

For RPG collectors, this is a chance to own the magazine that introduced many American players to Cecil's journey, back when 16-bit was the exciting new frontier.
