Item Description

Felix the Cat’s Magic Bag of Tricks was always good for a sight gag, and Hudson Soft turned it into the heart of a charming NES platformer. Power-ups transform the bag into ever sillier gadgets and vehicles, and the whole game moves with the rubbery, black-and-white bounce of the classic cartoon.

Nintendo Power Volume 40, from September 1992, puts Felix on the cover with a full feature, and the NES company around him is excellent, with coverage of Taito’s Little Samson and the NES version of Prince of Persia. On the Super NES side you’ll find Enix’s Soul Blazer, Dino City and Super Bowling, while Game Boy readers get The Jetsons: Robot Panic and Kingdom Crusade. Counselor’s Corner digs into The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Dragon Warrior III, and Classified Information serves up tricks for Tiny Toon Adventures, TMNT III: The Manhattan Project, Smash TV and The Punisher.

Seeing late-cycle NES gems share pages with a fresh 16-bit action RPG says a lot about Nintendo fandom in late 1992, with one foot in the 8-bit world and the other in the future. With a silent-film-era cartoon star fronting it all, this issue makes a warm, playful piece of that transition to own and reread.
