Item Description

Four controllers, one couch and a lot of trash talk: that was the promise of the NES Four Score and NES Satellite, and Nintendo Power built an entire strategy guide around it. The 4-Player Extra, published as Volume 19, is devoted to the games that turned the NES into a party machine.

Its main event, “4-Player Fun!!”, digs into six multiplayer standouts: NES Play Action Football, Gauntlet II, Nintendo World Cup, Swords and Serpents, Super Spike V’Ball and Ivan “Ironman” Stewart’s Super Off Road. It is a wonderfully eclectic lineup, swinging from shin-kicking soccer and beach volleyball to a dungeon crawl where four heroes squabble over every plate of food. A “4-Player Round-Up” then sweeps through more group-friendly carts, including Kings of the Beach, Spot: The Video Game, Magic Johnson’s Fast Break, Championship Bowling, M.U.L.E. and, unexpectedly, A Nightmare on Elm Street.

As one of the dedicated strategy-guide volumes Nintendo Power published in its early years, this one has a focused, single-theme feel the regular monthly issues never quite matched. It reads like a planning document for a 1990 sleepover, and it fills a distinctive slot on a Nintendo Power shelf that most runs of the magazine are missing.
